It'll look something like (caution, going totally from memory here) "HW340 R 3650 1234" where H is the series (not 100% sure on this, but H should be 1972), W=Windsor assembly plant, 340=340 (duh), R=regular fuel, 3650=10,000-day calendar date that the engine was BUILT, and 1234=the 1,234th engine built that day. The numbers for the ENGINE are stamped on the driver side of the block, right under where the head mounts. To get the ACTUAL assembly date for the ENGINE, you need to look at the front of the block on the machined face. It looks like it came from the 1,657th car down the line, which would agree with the very early casting date for the engine. 2=72 model year, B=Hamtramck assembly plant (for the car), 201657 is the sequential number for the particular car. That's the partial VIN on the pan rail, the 2B201657 are the last digits of the VIN for the car it came from. The block was cast 6/15/71, but it's a 72-model year engine. What does the 5 mean at the end of the casting number after the 340-? I also found the serial number of the block which is 2B201657. the decoding sites but no joy The plate below the white sticker and bar code has the numbers. (A number 4 near the front and one near the rear of the block.) I know the engine was made on 06-15-71. Engines, Exhaust and Fuel systems - Engine decode 340 /360. I have a 340 engine dated 6-15-71 casting number is 2780930-340-5 It has two large number 4's stamped on both sides of the block.
